Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an easy game that is included) comes with a new version out with Minetest 5.4.0 and is worth a second try.

As we have already stated during the release Candidate stage of the release, this version makes it easier to modify small mod packs as well as whole games. Minetest was a game that allowed players to browse and download mods directly from the game. However, it now also downloads all dependencies mods require - making it much easier to locate what you need and then load it into the game. It's no more necessary to download a single mod and then look for all the bits it needs.

Some improvements were made to the built-in game "Minetest Game". While quite bare-bones by itself, it serves as a nice base to show off the engine and for extending with modifications. With Minetest 5.4.0 it now comes with crafting guides, five more wood variants as well as ambient sounds for lava as well as active furnaces, new translations , and numerous bug fixes. It continues to build on the steady and slow build-up into something a bit bigger out of the box.

Other options include the ability to change the cross-hair when you point at objects, freely binding mouse buttons names for players now have semi-transparent backgrounds, a caverns option to generate flat maps, and the 'place' and 'fig keys are easily set up. Be Yourself; Everyone Else Is Already Taken There are a variety of bugs fixed, including the inability for players not to gain access to the inventory of other players.

It's wonderful to witness this open-source game engine and game making a splash. According to the official server list, Minetest is used by many people with hundreds online at the time this article goes live.
